Is a race night legal?

In a word, yes. Fundraising race nights are completely legal in the UK, and you do not need a gambling licence. Here is the plain-English version, and exactly how I keep your event on the right side of the rules.

100%
Legal for fundraising in the UK
No Licence
Needed for a good-cause event
30 Years
Run compliantly, trouble-free
The short answer

Yes, and here is why

A fundraising race night is exempt from standard gambling rules as long as it is run for a charity, school, PTA, sports club or community group, and not for personal profit. All the money raised, minus reasonable expenses, goes to your cause. That is what keeps it legal, and it is why thousands of schools, clubs and charities run one every year without any issue. Run correctly, and I make sure it is, a race night is as legal and straightforward as a raffle or a bingo night.

Common questions

Race night legality, answered

Do we need a gambling licence?
No. You do not need a gambling licence to run a fundraising race night in the UK, as long as it is for a good cause and not for personal profit. I make sure every event is run in line with the law.
Can schools and PTAs run betting events?
Yes. Schools and PTAs can absolutely run race nights as fundraisers, and it is a fun, effective way to raise money for trips, equipment and activities. I have plenty of experience keeping school events suitable and compliant.
Are there age restrictions?
Betting is for over-18s, but under-18s can still join in the fun by picking horses and cheering them on. I can advise on how to manage this so the night stays family-friendly.
What if someone tried to shut us down?
Highly unlikely. Every event is run in line with the regulations, with a proven track record of trouble-free nights, so any concerns are easily handled before they become a problem.
Could we get into trouble?
Not with me running it. I take responsibility for making sure the event is run legally and ethically, and I guide you through anything you need to know, so you can relax and enjoy the night.

This is a plain-English guide to how fundraising race nights work in the UK, not formal legal advice. Every event I run is set up to meet the requirements, and I am always happy to talk through the detail before you book.

Still got a question about the legal side?
